Beginning in 1935, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) combatted Depression-era unemployment by hiring millions of Americans to build public infrastructure and produce art. The schools, libraries, post offices, and murals that they produced featured art and architecture uniquely influenced by the Art Deco and Social Realism movements. This bus tour explores the numerous WPA sites throughout the South Bay, including impressive architecture and the largest petrachrome mural in the world: “The History of Transportation” in Inglewood. If you are interested in the Art Deco movement, art, architecture, or history, join us to find new stories in the world right outside your doors as we visit more than fifteen sites in Hermosa, Redondo, Torrance, Inglewood, and El Segundo. Your ticket includes a tour of South Bay WPA sites, a sit-down lunch at The Depot Restaurant (formerly a 1910s Pacific Electric Railway Station) with Chef Shafer, and a champagne toast at the newly-renovated Clark Building in Hermosa. It also supports the Hermosa Beach Museum in preserving local collections, developing educational programming, and creating future bus tours! The tour will begin promptly at 9am from the Clark Building, 861 Valley Drive, Hermosa Beach, on Saturday, November 8; please arrive by 8:45am to check in. We anticipate being back at the Clark Building for a brief champagne toast by 3:30pm. We look forward to seeing you there! Please note that the bus will have a restroom on-board, but is unfortunately not ADA accessible. The tour will also include two brief optional walking portions in Hermosa and Torrance, so comfortable shoes are encouraged.
